Winemaker's Notes:
BDX is a blend of
three Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Touriga
Nacional, the most recently approved Bordeaux variety. This is the third time that I am making BDX. I made my first BDX in 2008. At that time, I used Petit Verdot instead of
Touriga Nacional. A typical Bordeaux
blend consists of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, with small
additions of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Recently, four more varieties have been
approved to join the list: Arinarnoa, Castets, Marselan, and Touriga Nacional.
Bordeaux, the
most famous wine region in the world is subject to unstable weather
conditions. The weather in this region
can change abruptly before harvest delaying the harvest or even forcing a
harvest when the grapes are not completely ripe. When this occurs, it compromises the quality
of the wine. This hardly ever happens in our region, which normally has very
consistent weather.
In the three vintages
of BDX that we made so far Cabernet Sauvignon has been the leading component. When making Bordeaux varietals I am
always wary of potential bell pepper flavor, which I would prefer not to have
in my wines.
BDX is a full body
wine, dark ruby red in color with distinctive Cabernet aromas of black currants
and black cherry. The dark fruit carries
all the way to the palate revealing herbal qualities. The sustained finish has more dark fruit
adding nuances of smoke, leather and black pepper.
