2018 C.G. Di Arie Primitivo Block #4
Estate Grown
Shenandoah Valley, CA
Winemaker's Notes:
Primitivo, which
is also known as Zingarello is the
major growing grape of Apulia in Southern Italy. A typical Zingarello
in Apulia is a heavy, strong and highly alcoholic wine. DNA testing has confirmed that Primitivo is genetically related to
California's Zinfandel. Based on DNA profiling Primitivo and
Zinfandel originated in Croatia and are clones of a Croatian variety known Crljenak Kastelanski.
This Estate grown Primitivo comes from a two-acre vineyard block
that we call Block #4. Our Primitivo is very fruity and lighter in body and
very different from the Italian clone. While genetically identical, the Primitivo
that we grow shows different attributes than the Zinfandel that we planted practically
next door.
This wine was made in our "Submerged Cap" Fermentation Tank. It was aged in French oak barrels for about
18 months. This is a fruity wine with dark
fruit aromas, which carry to the palate adding blackberry and black cherry
flavors. It is well balanced with a long finish adding
structure and complexity.
