Winemaker’s Notes:
The “Southern Exposure” designation for our wines denotes
that we feel the wine has very special qualities. This is the first vintage of Southern
exposure Zinfandel that comes from our own estate-grown grapes. In the past we used to make this wine from
grapes obtained from the Grand Pere Vineyard, the oldest Zinfandel Vineyard
known in California. While some older
vineyards have the potential of producing distinctive wines. It would be a generalization to assume that
all old vineyard produce quality wines.
Our Zinfandel vineyard was planted in 2001. It took more than 10 years for the vines to
reach a level of maturity that allowed us to make such a wine.
The components of this wine were made individually in our
“Submerged Cap” fermentation tanks and aged for 15 months in predominantly French
oak. Throughout the process we were
careful to minimize harsh tannins, while still providing a solid backbone for
ageing potential.
The elegant nose of blackberries, plum, and dark cherries
carries all the way to the palate adding layers of cocoa, spice and vanilla. This wine has a long and smooth finish with
nuances of black pepper. A great wine to
drink now, or in years to come.
