2016 Taksim Square

Winemaker’s Notes:
This is my second vintage of “Taksim Square”. The name Taksim translates from Turkish as “improvisation” and at the same time it
is the name of the neighborhood in Istanbul that I grew up. Taksim
Square brings back to me many childhood memories which I wanted to
eternalize with the name of a wine.
This wine is a blend of Touriga Nacional, the major Port
varietal originating in Portugal; Syrah, a Rhone variety; and Primitivo which
originated in Croatia and moved to Pulia on the Adriatic coast of Italy in the nineteenth
century. The most influential variety in
this blend is the Touriga Nacional which is able to hide the identity of the
other components of the blend. Touriga
Nacional is considered to be Portugal’s finest wine grape variety which is also
being used in table wines. Touriga
Nacional in many ways is the Portuguese answer to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is very aromatic with floral and dark fruit
aromas, bold dark fruit flavors and firm tannins.
This wine has strong aromas of violets and dark berries which
carry to the palate with an explosion of dark fruit nd eartht, savory flavors. This is a prolific wine with unusual flavors,
a firm structure and a long and sustained finish. Judging from the previous vintage of this
wine which we made in 2009, this is a highly age-worthy wine that you can drink
today or stack it away for 15 – 20 years.
