This is the first vintage of “Taksim” which is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Primitivo. The name Taksim translates from Turkish as “improvisation” and at the same time it is the name of the neighborhood in Istanbul where I grew up. Taksim brings back to me many childhood memories which I wanted to eternalize with the name of a wine.
The most influential variety in this blend is the Touriga Nacional which is able to hide the identity of the other components of the blend. Touriga Nacional is considered to be Portugal’s finest wine grape variety. Traditionally it is the most important variety used in Port wines. But lately, it is also being used extensively in table wines. Touriga Nacional in many ways is the Portuguese answer to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is very aromatic with floral and dark fruit aromas, bold dark fruit flavors and firm tannins.
This wine has strong aromas of violets and blueberries which carry to the palate with an explosion of dark fruit flavors which are difficult to identify. This is a prolific wine with unusual flavors, a firm structure and a long and sustained finish. This is a very special wine to drink today but I think that it will become an amazing wine if you have the patience to wait 5 – 10 years.
