The grapes for
this wine came from the hilltop Duarte Vineyard in Georgetown. I
visited this vineyard several times during the growing season and
harvested the grapes when they were fully mature. We followed our
normal winemaking protocols and used our Dual Compartment Submerged
Cap Fermentation Tank and aged the wine in predominantly French oak
barrels. I blended this Grenache with a minor amount of Syrah like
they would in Southern Rhone in wines of distinction that come from
Chateauneuf du Pape or Gigondas. The Syrah contributed color,
flavor and structure for better balance.
This wine has
a very distinctive flavor and aroma of blueberry syrup, raspberries
and chocolate. In the mid-palate the flavor becomes more herbaceous
and leather-like which reminds me of the popular Argentinean mate
tea, without the bitterness and grassiness associated with it. The
sustained finish brings in more fruit, spice, cocoa, smoke and
hints of licorice. While very drinkable now, this wine will benefit
from years of aging.
