Winemaker’s
Notes:
The name “Due Amici” translates from Italian as two friends, in
this case the two varietals Primitivo and Zinfandel. The Croatian
variety Crljenak Kastelanski (sirl-YEN-ack kastel-AN-ski) is the
origin of both varietals. Crljenak Kastelanski, Primitivo, and
Zinfandel are all genetically identical, their differences arising
from the clonal selections process.
This wine is a
blend of 45% Primitivo, 45% Zinfandel, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5%
Petite Sirah. The Zinfandel comes from the Original Grand Pere
Vineyard where the dry farmed vines have spread their roots in the
same granitic soils in search of sustenance for over 140 years; the
Primitivo, Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah they all come from our
estate vineyards. These hillside vineyards with their shallow
decomposed granitic soils produce berries of intense flavor. After
fermentation in our submerged cap tanks the wine was aged for over
a year in French oak.
This “Due
Amici” first fills the senses with rich aromas of plum and black
cherry which carries to the palate adding layers of dark fruit,
chocolate and a hint of black pepper. This is an elegant wine that
has an unusually long finish. This wine drinks well now, and will
improve with several years of bottle age.
